COVID-19 New data and analysis

Today we at Narrative BI will explore some interesting insights from COVID-19 data by Our World in Data.

Data comes from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Johns Hopkins, and other institutions and maintained by Our World in Data.

As you can see, we have 2 main periods when the number of cases increased dramatically: from March 20 to April 12 (12K to almost 80K new cases) and from June to August (from 100K to almost 260K cases).

The number of daily deaths had almost the same trend with cases from Mid-March to Mid-April for deaths when it increased from 388 to 7412 cases, but then the number of daily deaths decreased to almost 4000 at the beginning of June but then started increasing to 5–6K daily.

The biggest COVID-19 mean death-rate was recorded on 20 February (17%). So, almost every fifth human died at the beginning of COVID-19. But in February, there were only 7 daily average tests per Million People in the World. For example, for now, we have 1 test per Thousand people.

We can see that the mean COVID-19 population D2D coverage is almost 0.005%. It means that everyday coronavirus, on average, affects only 5 people from 100K. However, the statistics and the number of tests can significantly vary from one country to another. It does not mean that some countries are trying to hide some information; maybe just people do not have the possibility to pass the COVID-19 test.

Let’s check death statistics by continents to see some patterns. We have many tests in Asia, Europe, and North America, but South America and Africa are significantly less informed about real situations with COVID-19.

From Mid-March to the beginning of August, the number of tests in North America, Europe, and Asia was increasing uniformly. It continued to increase in Asia and Europe, but in North America, it decreased.

We can see that the most dangerous continents at the beginning of COVID-19 (from March to April) surprisingly were Africa. After the massive coronavirus spread, the most dangerous region became North America (from April to 20 May).

From the end of May until the first weak of July, Europe became the place with the biggest mean death rate. After that situation in North America and Europe was stabilized, Asia and Africa have the biggest death rate.

However, Europe covered with tests almost 18% of the population on average, North America — 13%, Asia — 2.3%, Africa — 1.7%, and South America — only 0.6%.

Ireland has the biggest death rate among the countries with GPD per Capita of more than 65K$. There are almost 32К COVID-19 cases, and the mean death rate is 6.9%

As we know, COVID-19 is the most dangerous for people older than 70 years old, and statistics can prove it. Only Japan demonstrates a comparatively low number of deaths (11.4 per million on average) with such a big share of aged people (18.5%). For example, Italy has around 16% of aged people and around 54 times bigger deaths (588 per million).

Bolivia has the biggest amount of deaths (629 per million) among countries with a low index of handwashing facilities (25/100). Almost 7.1% of people are in extreme poverty.

San Marino is the most affected country by COVID-19 (1237 deaths per million) in the World because of high life expectancy (and therefore a large number of aged people) and a low number of hospital beds. There are only 3.8 hospital beds per 1K people, and life expectancy is almost 85 years old. For example, South Korea, with a high life expectancy (83 years old) and a comparatively large hospital beds (12.3 per 1K), has only 7 deaths per million.

Croatia has the biggest death rate (15.2%) among the countries with low Stringency Index (40/100). The index is a composite measure based on nine response indicators, including school closures, workplace closures, and travel bans.
